Bolton Instruments Repairs

Clarinet Services

“Our clarinet services are designed to keep your instrument playing smoothly, sealing correctly, and responding consistently across its full range. Whether you play a student clarinet or a professional model, regular clarinet servicing helps preserve tone quality, tuning stability, and overall reliability.”

Clarinet Services with Booths

As part of our clarinet services, the necessary keywork is carefully removed, allowing for a thorough cleaning and de-greasing of the body, tone hole rims, and key mechanisms. This process removes built-up residue that can affect pad sealing and airflow. Each key is individually inspected and cleaned to ensure it functions correctly and efficiently.

Clarinet pads are then checked for condition and seating. Where possible, pads can be revitalised, or replaced if worn or damaged. All corks and felts are inspected and renewed where necessary to ensure quiet, precise key movement and comfortable action. At this stage, we also assess the condition of the springs, replacing or adjusting them as needed to restore balanced and reliable key response.

Even Balance

Once prepared for reassembly, all rods, screws, pivot points, and moving components are lubricated, an essential step in ensuring smooth, quiet operation of the clarinet’s keywork. The keys are then refitted to the instrument, allowing us to assess pad seating and fine-tune individual spring tensions. Achieving an even balance across the entire key system is crucial for a consistent and confident playing experience.

A key element of our clarinet services is the regulation of the keywork. Many clarinet keys are designed to operate together, and precise regulation is essential to ensure they function in harmony. Careful balancing and adjustment ensure accurate sealing, dependable response, and improved intonation throughout the instrument’s range.

The Final Polish

Finally, each clarinet undergoes a pressure test and final polish, confirming that the instrument is airtight and performing as it should. The result is a clarinet that feels more responsive, plays more comfortably, and sounds clearer and more focused.

"My six year old flute was beginning to sound breathy and it was getting hard to play top notes clearly (I thought it was me). Tony serviced my flute last week. It sounds like a brand new flute! It sings again 🎶. Tony replaced a faulty key pad and sorted out the cork mechanism which was moving around. Thank you so much. I’ll be back again next year for its next service"

"I am writing to thank you for your repair of my clarinet that my mum brought in for repair. My son had his first lesson today in New York State. I am thrilled with your repair - it feels even better that when my parents bought it for me back in 1984!! My son is so excited to learn. Thanks! Zoe"
