Bolton Instruments Repairs

Flute Services

“Our flute services are designed to keep your instrument performing at its very best, ensuring reliable response, accurate intonation, and smooth, effortless key action. Whether you play a student model or a professional instrument, regular flute servicing helps maintain tone quality, comfort, and long-term condition.”

Flute Services with Booths

As part of our flute services, all necessary keywork is carefully removed, allowing for a thorough cleaning and de-greasing of the flute body, tubing, and tone hole rims. This process removes accumulated dirt and residue that can interfere with pad sealing and overall performance. Each key is individually inspected, cleaned, and assessed for wear.

Pads are checked for condition and seating, with pad revitalisation or replacement carried out where required. Corks and felts are inspected and replaced if worn, helping to maintain quiet, precise key movement. At this stage, we also examine the condition of the springs, ensuring consistent tension and renewing them where necessary to restore accurate key response.

responsive and leak-free

Once cleaned and prepared for reassembly, all rods, pivot points, and screws are lubricated, a crucial step in maintaining the smooth and fluid operation of the flute’s keywork. The keys are then reassembled onto the instrument, allowing us to assess pad seating, alignment, and spring balance. Achieving even, reliable pressure across the entire key system is essential for a responsive and leak-free flute.

The Final Polish

A vital stage of our flute services is the regulation of the keywork. Many flute keys operate in combination with others, meaning precise adjustment is required for them to work together seamlessly. Careful regulation ensures accurate sealing, consistent finger response, and dependable performance throughout the full range of the instrument.

Finally, each flute undergoes a pressure test and final polish before being returned to the player. This ensures the instrument is airtight, visually refreshed, and ready to be enjoyed to its full potential. The result is a flute that feels more responsive, sounds clearer, and plays with greater confidence.

"My six year old flute was beginning to sound breathy and it was getting hard to play top notes clearly (I thought it was me). Tony serviced my flute last week. It sounds like a brand new flute! It sings again 🎶. Tony replaced a faulty key pad and sorted out the cork mechanism which was moving around. Thank you so much. I’ll be back again next year for its next service"

"I am writing to thank you for your repair of my clarinet that my mum brought in for repair. My son had his first lesson today in New York State. I am thrilled with your repair - it feels even better that when my parents bought it for me back in 1984!! My son is so excited to learn. Thanks! Zoe"
